What Is a Google Chat Space? A Plain-English Guide

A Google Chat Space is a persistent chat room where members gather around a topic or project. It works much like a "channel" in Slack, and you can use it right from within Gmail. Anyone with a free personal Google account can create a collaboration space, and Google Workspace (business) accounts can also create announcement-only spaces for one-way updates.

The name "Google Spaces" has a slightly confusing history. Between 2016 and 2017, Google ran a separate standalone app also called "Google Spaces," but it was shut down after about a year — that old app has nothing to do with the feature described here. The current Spaces feature dates back to September 2021, when Google renamed "Rooms" inside Google Chat to "Spaces." It has kept gaining new features ever since.

Google Chat offers three broad ways to talk with people: one-on-one "DMs," multi-person "group chats," and persistent, topic- or project-based "Spaces." Inside a Space, there are three additional building blocks: threads, a file tab, and a task tab. Here is how they all fit together.

DMs and group chats are built for temporary conversations. A Space, on the other hand, is designed as a permanent room where information keeps building up for as long as a project lasts. Here is how they compare.

A Space has a "file tab" that lists only the files shared inside it. For example, if a sales team's Space is used to exchange proposals and quotes, no one has to dig through old messages to find "that one file" — everyone can just open the file tab and see the full list.

The "task tab" connects to Google Tasks (Google's to-do list service) and lets members be assigned tasks directly inside the Space. For example, in a Space used for monthly accounting work, someone can assign "invoice checks to Person A, payment confirmation to Person B" on the spot, so chat and the to-do list no longer need to be managed separately.

"Huddles" let people start a quick voice or video call the moment text alone isn't cutting it. For example, if a discussion in a development team's Space has gone back and forth for too long in a thread, someone can say "let's just huddle for five minutes," often reaching a conclusion faster than typing it all out.

Since December 2025, a "scheduled send" feature has also been available, letting messages be scheduled up to 120 days ahead. For example, a routine monthly announcement can be prepared at the end of the previous month and set to post automatically on the intended date.

Google Chat also includes the AI assistant Gemini, which can summarize conversations, search for files stored in Google Drive, and help brainstorm ideas. For example, when there is no time to scroll back through a long-running discussion in a Space, asking Gemini for a summary can bring everyone up to speed quickly. Note that availability depends on your plan — it is not included with the Business Starter plan, for instance.

Spaces can also have apps added to them to build simple workflows.
