GEO (Generative Engine Optimization)
Also known as: Generative Engine Optimization / 生成エンジン最適化
Optimization techniques aimed at maximizing citation and visibility in AI-generative search engines such as AI Overviews, Perplexity, and ChatGPT Search — a concept that emerged alongside LLMO after 2024.
Overview
GEO was coined in academic papers (Princeton et al., 2023) to describe techniques for increasing citation probability in generative AI responses. In Japan it is treated as largely synonymous with LLMO, sharing common approaches: structured data, trust signals, and citation-friendly prose.
GEO vs LLMO
GEO tends to appear in academic contexts while LLMO is the term that took hold in Japan's SEO community. Google officially states no special optimization is required for either, but Google's AI Optimization Guide clearly categorizes effective versus ineffective tactics.
