Helpful Content
Also known as: Helpful Content Update / HCU / ヘルプフルコンテンツ / 役立つコンテンツ
A Google algorithm principle introduced in 2022 that rewards genuinely helpful, people-first content and demotes content created primarily to capture search traffic, including low-quality AI-generated or scaled content.
Overview
Helpful Content is a site-wide signal that rewards content made for people. It was integrated with the core update in March 2024. Original research, first-hand experience, and genuine expertise are rewarded, while thin, mass-produced pages can drag down the entire site's evaluation.
Relationship with AI-Generated Content
Google does not prohibit AI-generated content per se — high-quality, helpful AI content is acceptable. However, Scaled Content Abuse (mass AI-generated spam) is explicitly a policy violation. See our LLMO content writing techniques for the right approach.
